A public musical performance given before an audience.
A concert is a live performance event where musicians present music to an assembled audience. Concerts range from intimate solo recitals in small halls to massive outdoor festivals with tens of thousands of attendees. In classical music, a concert programme typically features works by several composers performed by a soloist, ensemble, or orchestra under a conductor. Popular music concerts, often called gigs or shows, usually feature a single artist or band performing their own songs. The concert hall, with its carefully designed acoustics, is the traditional venue for orchestral and chamber music, while rock and pop concerts use amplification systems. The concert tradition as we know it developed in the 18th century, when public ticketed performances began replacing private aristocratic patronage.
The longest concert ever performed lasted 639 years — an ongoing performance of John Cage's "As Slow as Possible" that started in 2001 in Halberstadt, Germany.
