angklung
instrumentsANG-kloong
A Javanese and Sundanese instrument made of bamboo tubes mounted in a frame, shaken to produce notes.
Each angklung produces a single note when shaken, so an ensemble requires multiple players to create melodies, with each person responsible for their note. This creates a communal music-making experience where cooperation is essential. Angklung ensembles are a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Indonesia. The instruments range from small, high-pitched tubes to large bass angklungs that require two hands to play. The bamboo produces a warm, resonant, bell-like tone.
