A musician who plays the guitar.

A guitarist performs on either acoustic guitar or electric guitar, two of the most popular instruments worldwide.‌‌‌‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‌‍‍ Classical guitarists use fingerpicking technique to perform solo works and chamber music, while rock and pop guitarists often use a plectrum and rely on amplification and effects like distortion, delay, and reverb. Jazz guitarists specialise in chord voicings, comping, and improvisation. Techniques common to guitarists include barre chord shapes, string bending, hammer-on, pull-off, slide, and alternate picking. The guitarist serves as both a melodic and harmonic voice, capable of playing chord progressions, riffs, and solos. Bass guitar players, while technically guitarists, usually identify as bassists and fulfil a distinct rhythmic and harmonic role.
