The German operatic system for classifying singing voices into detailed categories that match singers with appropriate roles
The Fach system (from the German Fach, meaning compartment or subject) divides voices into categories based on range, weight, colour, agility, and stamina. Key designations include: soubrette, lyric soprano, spinto soprano, dramatic soprano, lyric mezzo, dramatic mezzo, contralto, lyric tenor, Heldentenor, lyric baritone, Verdi baritone, bass-baritone, basso cantante, and basso profondo. Opera houses use the Fach system to cast roles and protect singers from vocally unsuitable assignments.
The Fach system is so specific that it distinguishes between a jugendlicher Heldentenor (youthful heroic tenor) and a schwerer Heldentenor (heavier heroic tenor) — two subtypes most audiences would never notice.
